The boat used for charters is a 609 Hard Top Stabicraft built in Invercargill New
Zealand for the waters of the Foveaux Strait, right at the very bottom of the South
Island. As you could imagine, those waters exposed directly to the Tasman Sea,
are some of the most unpleasent around.
For Qld survey purposes the boat measures 5.95m and can carry 8 people in
total. Its operational limit is 15Nm from land or partially smooth waters putting it
in range of fishing hotspots like Cape Moreton, Caloundra Wide, the Caloundra
12mile, the 50m line, Chardons Reef, North Reef plus numerous wrecks and that
is just off the Sunshine Coast.
It has a maximum horsepower rating of 175 but the 140 Johnson 4 stroke that is
fitted is ample. Being a 4 stroke, there is no smoke or smell to help keep sea-
sickness away. It is also relatively quiet and vibration free compared to some
outboards you may have been used to in the past.
Electronics wise, the boat is fitted with a full Navman suite comprising 4500
Fishfinder, 5500 GPS Chartplotter and fuel flow meter and VHF radio with DSC
capabilities. In addition it also sports a 1kW Furuno sounder, Lowrance GPS,
Eagle GPS, 27 Meg radio and a CD player.
In the fishing department the boat sports all the best Reelax gear, a large
live bait tank, berley buckets as well as a Canon downrigger.
